A new study finds that Canadian servers are hosting more and more bot, or automatic hacking, networks and phishing websites. Canada is shooting up the rankings of the world's worst countries for cyber crime, jumping from 13th to sixth among places where most online crimes originate, according to a new report. Between 2010 and 2011, the number of Canadian servers hosting phishing sites more than tripled, the Websense report says, while the number of automated bot networks rose by more than 50 per cent. Only Egypt had larger percentage increases from 2010 in the number of cyber crimes. The investigation into Canadian cyber crime is partly a response to a massive breach of security at the offices of the federal Treasury Board and the Department of Finance in February.
