One of the major sore points for users switching from Microsoft to Apple operating systems is the prior investments made on Windows programs. Not only do the users need to repurchase Mac versions of their favorite software, they sometimes have to give up some programs that lack Mac-compatible equivalents. This is a major issue for gamers, as a significant proportion of gaming titles are still written exclusively for Microsoft's platform.
This is where virtualization software comes in. Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac not only allows Windows software to run on a Mac as a window, but also recognizes Windows partitions made with Apple Boot Camp. The latest update has been optimized to work with GPU and DirectX 9, which promises to allow Windows games to work better on Mac machines.
To test the gaming capability claim, we ran Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on a 21.5-inch iMac running on a Core i3 3.06GHz processor and 256MB Radeon HD 4670 GPU. This game was tested by the company as being compatible with the Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac software and it worked within expectations. While we had to set the graphics at low, the frame rates remained playable despite the fact that we had background Mac processes running.
However, things took a different turn when we tried out older titles such as Bounty Hunter and Elven Legacy. While the graphics requirements are not as stringent as first person shooter games, the experience was not as expected. During certain scenes we experience dropped frames and occasionally the game crashes.
So if you intend to buy Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac to run Windows games on OS X, we strongly advise you to check if the title is on the list of tested games here. Otherwise, the
