Hong Kong Election Online (Civil Referendum) Hacked
Last Sunday the hackers have targeted the Hong Kong elections, Online "civil referendum" system. The director of the initiative confirmed the security breach on Friday. The election to choose Hong Kong's next chief executive is going to take place on Sunday, but only 1,200 people, members of Hong Kong's election commission, will vote. The election campaign has been riddled by scandals and protests, even though both candidates, Henry Tang and Leung Chun-ying, have close ties to Beijing.
The University of Hong Kong's "civil referendum" was launched to gauge how the people might have voted if given a choice. It allowed people to vote by mobile phone or the Internet on the website (popvote.hk) and operated normally when it opened on Thursday but then crashed given what Robert Chung, the director, called "high-level cyber attacks" that crippled servers. "We do not quite understand the motive," Chung told reporters. Chung said around 14,000 responses had been received in the civil referendum. Despite the technical difficulties, he said he was hopeful of 100,000 eventual responses.
"We hope we can preserve this opportunity for people to vote," Chung added.

Last week the security functions of a pilot project for online voting in Washington D.C. compromised. Researchers at the University of Michigan have reported that it took them only a short time to crack the security of the whole function. "Within 48 hours of the system going live, we had gained near complete control of the election server"
